Nyonyaware #9

Label:

Nyonya ware is the term given to a variety of colourful overglazed enamel porcelain, made in Ching-te Chen, Kiangsi province China in the 19th and early 20th centuries, to the taste and specific orders of the Straits Chinese in Malaya and Singapore, especially by rich Baba families.
These wares held pride of place during auspicious occasions and were so called because they were inherited matrilineally by the Nyonyas or females of the family. Their quality and quantity were a reflection of the wealth and social standing of the owners.
Of the all emblems, the phoenix and peonies were the most distinctively pervasive. The phoenix is symbolic of the warmth of the sun, fertility stability and permanence. The peonies stand for wealth, love and affection, feminine beauty, honour and happiness.
Nyonya ware in recent years has attained the status of collector’s items, although these porcelain were once only part and parcel of a Nyonya household.
